52nd TIFF: Closing ceremony

CLOSING CEREMONY

The 52nd edition of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival reaches its end with the award ceremony and the screening of Sean Durkin’s film Martha Marcy May Marlene. The closing ceremony will open with a performance by the Rotonda group of string instruments, which is formed by students of the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, under artistic director Irina Dragneva.

In his directorial debut, Martha Marcy May Marlene, which won the
2011 Sundance Festival Directing Award for Best Drama, Sean Durkin narrates the story of a woman – played by Elizabeth Olsen in a riveting performance – who is hoping to get back to a normal life after her mysterious escape from a cult. However, her past and present intermingle dangerously, blurring the boundaries separating reality and delusion, with the heroine gradually falling into a state of paranoia. The film is a powerful and atmospheric psychological thriller, “toying” with the mind of the viewers.

The festival’s closing film is part of the TIFF Open Horizons section, which is one of the festival’s events funded by the European Union – European Regional Development Fund, in the framework of the Central Macedonia Regional Operational Program, 2007-2013.
