The Sinking of the Lusitania

The Sinking of the Lusitania

  #memory

In 1915, a German submarine torpedoed British liner “RMS Lusitania,” leaving 1,198 dead; the event outraged famous cartoonist Winsor McKay, but his media magnate employer Rudolph Hirst downplayed its impact being opposed to the US joining WWI. McKay stood his ground and spent 22 months preparing this silent 12-minute animation: the earliest surviving animated documentary in film history.
