Exile Island

During the period 1947-52, an innovative experiment took place just a few miles outside Athens. Its subject: to rehabilitate leftists. Its location: the desert island of Makronissos. More than 100,000 people suffered in this “National Reformatory”. Many of the survivors are still alive, as are many of their torturers. Now, in their 80s and 90s, they are willing to confront each other and share their experience.

Εlias Yannakakis

He was born in Athens in 1968. From 1992 to 1999 he studied Cinema and worked as assistant director. At the same time he made 3 short films. From 1999 up to now he has directedmore than 50 documentaries for ERT. In 2004 he made his first feature documentary, Yannis Kouros, Forever Running,which won awards at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. In 2005 he made his second feature documentary Walter the Greek and his first fiction film Alemaya.

Evi Karabatsou

Born in Athens in 1969. In 1994 she made her first short film Not Yet. In 1996 and 1997 she worked as a filmmaker for the UN in Rwanda where she made 6 documentaries. From 1998 to 2004 she lived in Cuba, where she made the short film Nuestra senora de los perros and the documentary Margot. Her films have won several national and international prizes.
