The Phantom Carriage

Edit, a Salvation Army worker on her deathbed longs to have one final glimpse of the man she never stopped trying to redeem– David Holm. Holmis in a graveyard, drinking with two other men, relating the legend of how the last person to die before the stroke of the New Year is bound, doomed and dammed to spend the next year driving the phantom carriage – the horse-drawn conveyance Death employs to receive the souls. Holmlaughs off the tale – as he’s laughed off every cautionary warning in his life of wilful sin – but when he collapses and perishes just beforemidnight, he’s finally confronted with a judgment and duty he cannot shirk or laugh off...

On Tuesday, November 18, the movie will be screened along with live music from Good Luck Mr. Gorsky & Eventless Plot.

Victor Sjostrom

Without a shred of filmexperience, stage actor and directorVictor Sjostrom was hired in 1912 as lead film director by the fledgling Swedish Biograph Company. Over the next five years, he made roughly 30 films including Ingeborg Holm and The Phantom Carriage, and was universally recognized as a master of cinema, whose films were characterized by their sensitive performances and stunning cinematography. In the 20s, he worked at 20th Century Fox under the name Seastrom and directed such classics as HeWho Gets Slapped and TheWind. He was widely celebrated for his performance as Isak Borg in Ingmar Bergman’s Wild Strawberries (1957).
