In the words of researcher and journalist Thodoris Antonopoulos: “Dildo Riot (2021) was an ‘offshoot’ of the riots that broke out in December 2008 in Athens and across Greece following the murder of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a police officer in Exarcheia. During the mass protests and riots across the city center, a sex shop at the beginning of Syngrou Avenue, near Maria’s office, was broken into. Among the wares thrown into the street were many vibrators, several of which were used as weapons against the riot police by protesters who had sought refuge in the Syngrou-Fix metro station. Next morning, Maria and two of her friends collected an oversized plastic dildo abandoned on the battlefield; this was the inspiration for this enjoyable short film, shot during lockdown at the height of the pandemic.”
