The city of Zhalanash in Kazakhstan, a former stronghold of Soviet economy, was once the border between a vast desert and the great Aral Sea, the continental lake in central Asia that is now drained. The evocative, empty landscape mirrors the hopes of the locals who live between shipwrecks and rusty cranes, clinging to each other in the face of the cruelness of nature and humans alike.
