Images of the Orient: Vandal Tourism

The directors plunge into the archives of a British bourgeois family and discover film stock from the trips of a couple to India in 1928 and 1929 – right at the peak of the struggle against colonization. Even the most “innocent,” private moments of the couple betray their arrogant gaze at the exotic Orient and the world of the natives. The processed images reveal the dramatic tension between the satisfied tourists and the local populations: While the British enjoy their tea in the garden of the Maharajah, the locals wander starving in the streets. How different is this image from today’s massive tourism?
