If the modern history of Thessaloniki has been identified with the institution of the Film Festival and its iconography, the way in which the city’s inhabitants recall the images of the (not too distant) past is associated with a different medium: the typographic reproduction. Looking back at the postcards of Thessaloniki from the early 20th century to the dawn of the contemporary era, Yannis Karlopoulos collects fingerprints of communication and ethnographic footprints of the previous era to produce a modern city guide. The endeavor, to be published as a special edition in 2022, is presented here as a work in progress, taking us on a tour not only of photogenic, albeit forgotten,

views of Thessaloniki, but also of a particular “palimpsest” methodology that considers the history of visual technology to be interwoven with the social and the politics of a place. As part of the same event, an exhibition displaying the results of Karlopoulos’s long-term research is being held for a week upstairs on the first floor of Ypsilon. Entry is free.
