Papicha

60th TIFF: Greek Premiere

Algeria, 1997. The nation is roiled in a bloody civil war that pits the authoritarian government against fundamentalist terrorist groups, who aim at an Islamic and archaic state. In this oppressed environment, women who refuse to comply are persecuted and assaulted in every chance. A young university student, passionate about fashion, becomes determined to combat the growing restrictions on freedom by organizing a fashion show, an ingenious act of resistance in dark times of extremism.
