Ying, a 14-year-old girl from a rural Chinese village, is found pregnant and names a schoolteacher as the father. Everyone seems excessively concerned with her predicament, in reality enforcing their way onto her body and mind, tussling around her like dogs over a bone. Ying, at first oblivious to manipulation, slowly emerges from the mists that sweep this godforsaken waste land: she finally owns her story. A moral fable that reassembles the pieces of a shattered mirror into a picture far more elusive and abstract, minding the gaps between the shards. Human nature is a mystery destined to remain unsolved.

Beijing-based director Zhai Yixiang made his directorial feature debut with the film This Worldly Life, which was selected to participate at the Chinese Independent Film Festival and went on to receive a number of prizes and accolades in festivals all over the world. His second feature Mosaic Portrait celebrated its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
