The Quiet Migration

Stille Liv

64th TIFF: Greek Premiere
Born in Korea, 20-year-old Carl was adopted at a very young age by a childless Danish farming family. Despite being raised in a Danish environment, the young man lives and is treated as a foreigner in the conservative and racist Danish province. And when his father retires, Carl is called upon to decide who he truly is. Honored with the FIPRESCI Prize at last year’s Berlinale, Korean-born Danish director Malene Choi's second film draws on her painful experiences in order to narrate a universal story of alienation but also to address – often with a touch of biting humor – the profound human yearning for belonging. This understated film, with its Bressonian nuances and gentle dignity, delicately alludes to our collective longing for identity and acceptance.
