God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya

Gospod postoi, imeto i' e Petrunija

In a small town in North Macedonia, the blessing of the waters taking place on Epiphany Day holds great value within the local community, as the person who retrieves the cross is believed to gain good fortune and prosperity. Petrunya, a single unemployed woman, dives into the water and catches the cross, infuriating her male competitors who disguise their feeling of inferiority under a strait-laced accusation of impiety. Petrunya will stand her ground, refusing to return the cross. A woman who fights back patriarchal stereotypes and conservative morals, in a world of inequality and injustice.
