Heimat is a Space in Time

Heimat ist ein Raum aus Zeit

60th TIFF: Greek Premiere

A school essay on war, a torn-up highway, love letters of unknown senders and recipients read aloud, labor camps, children’s drawings and photographs all come together, in a black-and-white collage that carefully pieces together recollections that run down three generations of the filmmaker’s family, while ramming through German collective memory. Mentions of ordinary incidents interweave fluidly with details on groundbreaking large-scale events, weaving a bond between our life stories and history. A stunning diary of ellipses and disrupted pathways that invites the viewer to ponder the missing links and reflect on the notions of causality and continuity.
