Embodiment of Evil

After years of imprisonment in a mental ward of the State Penitentiary, Coffin Joe is finally released. Back on the streets, the sadistic undertaker is intent on fulfilling the mission that got him jailed the first time: find a woman who can beget a perfect son. Coffin Joe is tormented by the specters of his past victims, but continues determined, believing these encounters to be mere manifestations of his unconscious mind. Among the women chosen to be tested are Hilda, who is submitted to a sadistic ritual involving drugs, mutilations and cannibalism. One of his hallucinations takes him to Purgatory where he meets the Mystifier, an angel-demon who reveals surrealistic horrors to him. Upon his return to reality, he continues testing other women and the wave of attacks leave behind a trail of crimes, which impel the police to hunt him down and try to kill him.

Jose Mojica Marins

He is a director, screenwriter, film and television actor. He was born in 1936 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His interest in filmmaking began at an early age; his father ran a local cinema, and the family literally lived behind the screen. Though poor, he managed to scrape together enough money to complete a film at age 12. By age 18 he had completed over 80 shorts. He originated the character of  “Coffin Joe” in 1963’s "At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul", taking on the role after the original actor backed out. The film was screened out of competition at the 2008 Venice IFF.
