Fortress Europe

This docudrama was shot in bordering regions between Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy. The southeastern border of the EU is under heavy observation in the aftermath of the Schengen Treaty and is serving to strengthen the nationalist tendencies and police forces of the Eastern European states. Based on true events, Zilnik reconstructs the stories of several people trying to cross these borders. The central plot revolves around a Russian family: Svetlana lives in Trieste with her friends and is waiting for her daughter Katja’s arrival. Katja is escorted by Svetlana’s former husband (Katja’s father) Artjom. During the journey, the two of them encounter problems and find themselves in a foreign country without the documents that would make the rest of their journey to the West legal
