Hammam Memories

The Hammam of Rhodes, built around the year 1700, was a Turkish bathhouse where Greeks, Turks, Jews and Europeans living in Rhodes would gather to cleanse their bodies. Inside the Hammam, they washed, side by side, naked, leaving their cultural identities behind and temporarily making peace. Outside it, however, their ethnic divisions and religious conflicts prevailed. In Hammam Memories, five inhabitants of the island (Greeks, Turks and Jews) talk about the past, the Greek-Turkish issue and the genocide of the Jewish population of the island, and proudly struggle to reconcile with their regrets. Their interviews are intercut with scenes of a fictional reconstruction inside the Hammam.
