Women in Black

The population of the village of Maralia, in the mountains of Crete, consists today of five old women. All five of them are widows. They are the women in black. They have experienced the death of their husbands and the gradual departure of their children for the big cities. Yet they renounce the facilities of life in an urban center and they still stand for their right to self-sufficiency. Women, wives, mothers, grandmothers, workers, but also bearers of an oral tradition that is fading fast. Women whose lives were determined by an attitude of constant resignation. Today, these women have been released from their multiple roles of the past and are the only sovereigns of themselves and their land. Through a chronicle over four seasons, they reveal to us their everyday life and their personal memories of the past; their personal sacrifices; the ineffable social rules of small rural communities; their fondest dreams and their suppressed femininity.
