Milos Revisited

A documentary based on color 8mm films shot on the island of Milos between 1956-1962 by Agathocles Kypriotis (Athens, 1910-1978) who, due to his political beliefs, ended up on the island in 1946 and took over as director of the barite factory. During his 17 years there, he became deeply involved in local life, helping in the modernization of the islanders’ living conditions and the building of the settlement of Pollonia. At the same time, he filmed the islanders and their way of life. For many years his films remained undiscovered. Fifty years later, we visited Milos and met 49 of his “protagonists”. We showed them the films and they told us the strange story of Kypriotis. His name remains legendary on Milos, mostly because of events surrounding his sudden removal from the factory in 1962 – a taboo subject to this day.
