Morphia

Late in the fall of 1917, 23-year-old Dr. Polyakov arrives at the hospital in the provincial town of N. One day, while fighting for the life of a patient, Dr. Polyakov’s own life is put in danger. He is saved with an injection of the powerful narcotic morphia. But Polyakov doesn’t believe that a sensible man, especially a doctor like himself, can fall victim to a crippling addiction.

Alexey Balabanov

He was born in 1959 in Sverdlovsk, Ukraine and graduated from the Translation Faculty of the Gorky Pedagogical University. From 1983-1987 he worked as an assistant director at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio. In 1990 he graduated from the Advanced Course for Scriptwriters and Directors. In 1992, together with the producers Sergey Selyanov and Viktor Grigoryev Balabanov, he cofounded the CTB Film Company which later produced most of his films. His film The Castle, based on Franz Kafka’s novel, was awarded the Nika Prize of the Russian Film Academy. His 11th film, Cargo 200, which premiered at the 64th Venice FF, attracted much attention amongst the public and the press.
