Brujería

64th TIFF: Greek Premiere
In 1880, a fierce battle broke out on the island of Chiloé in Chile between the indigenous Huilliche tribe and German colonists, with the former having only ancient traditions and magic to contend with against the brutal imposition of power that was decimating them. When 13-year-old Rosa sees her servant father unjustly put to death by their white master, she will renounce her Christian upbringing and embrace her heritage, seeking vindication through the metaphysical practices of her tribe. The Chilean Christopher Murray delves into the shadowy colonial past of his homeland through an unusual coming-of-age story, which he unfolds profoundly, constantly playing with thriller elements and effectively harnessing the eerie beauty of the natural landscape captured in María Secco’s photography.
