Julie and the Shoe Factory

Sur quel pied danser

58th TIFF: Greek Premiere

Julie is a young woman who lives in Southeastern France, in a town that used to be the heartland of female shoes production. While struggling to stand on both feet, despite stumbling upon unemployment and other coming-of-age obstacles, she gets a job in a luxury show factory. When rumors of an impending sale of the factory surface, Julie will have to decide whether she will revolt with her colleagues, thus putting in action the true meaning of female emancipation. An unprecedented alloy of musical and social realism comedy about the working class – that every so often does go to Heaven – that could have been shot by Jacques Demy if he ever lived in times of precarious employment.

Paul Calori

Paul Calori was born in 1978 and studied Literature and Cinema in École Normale Supérieure (Paris), dedicating his master’s thesis to the films of writer Georges Perec. With Kostia Testut would go on to La Fémis, the French national film school, in 2002. Paul specialized in directing and making short films, while Kostia specialized in screenwriting. They spent several years transposing the idea of the short (a musical set in a factory threatened by downsizing) to the feature film format. Since leaving La Fémis, both have continued working on individual projects.
