64th TIFF: Greek Premiere
A couple of young Danish artists and their son Nemo move from Copenhagen to an isolated forest house in Sweden in the hope of rekindling their relationship. They hope to find themselves as individuals while documenting their new lifestyle in an ongoing podcast series. Regretfully, they realize there's another couple across the lake, which is surprisingly alike themselves. Their son’s disappearance brings them face to face with their doppelgangers. The fight for survival is on... Twisting the Scandinavian tradition of the chamber drama – focusing on the fundamental split between self-realization and being present in life – with a healthy dose of psychological and metaphysical thriller tropes, this impressive feature debut attacks bourgeois sensibilities in a playful, uncanny fashion. At the same time, by openly addressing its kinship to Jordan Peele’s Us and Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, it presents a prime example of the “female gaze” in horror. After all, not only beauty, but also horror is in the eye of the beholder!
