A Song Sung Blue

Xiao Bai Chuan

64th TIFF: Greek Premiere
Fifteen-year-old Liu Xian faces a life-changing move when her mother, pursuing her medical career, is deployed to Africa. She is asked to go live with her photographer father, whom she has seen little of since her parents' separation. However, an unexpected teenage romance awaits her there. With its sublime cinematography that lends it a dreamlike quality, A Song Sung Blue is a bittersweet coming-of-age story, composed of small yet meaningful details that uncover the unexpected ways in which people come together, form connections, and love. Steeped in a haze of nostalgia, delicately directed, and narratively intricate, this film is a beautiful example of cinematic minimalism. It resonates with emotion without ever raising the intensity more than necessary; it’s a cinematic "song" you'll want to keep in your soul.
