The Permanent Picture

La Imatge Permanent

64th TIFF: Greek Premiere
In a forgotten rural corner of southern Spain, teenager Antonia abandons her baby in the middle of the night. Fifty years later, in a city much farther north, her chance encounter with Carmen, an introverted casting director searching for individuals for her next project, will stir up emotions and memories from a life that was imprinted upon another, as if in a superimposition. Placing at its core the bond that develops between two women beyond the scope of motherhood, drawing clear inspiration from Paris, Texas and writing her script together with Carlos Vermut (director of the award-winning Magical Girl), first-time filmmaker Laura Ferrés examines with compassion and subtle touches of provocative humor, the bigger (fundamentally permanent) picture of a country that resists the modernizing shifts and turns of the past few decades.

Laura Ferrés

Laura Ferrés (1989) is a writer and director. Her first short film, Los Desheredados, is a portrait of her father facing the end of the family bus company. It premiered at Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week, where it won the award for best short film. Since then, it has been screened at 80 film festivals, nominated at the European Film Awards, and awarded Best Short Film at the Goya Awards by the Spanish Film Academy, among other distinctions. The short film was released in Spanish theaters, not before a feature or as part of a shorts program, but solo, an unprecedented event in Spain as far as short films are concerned. The Permanent Picture is her first feature film.
