Midnight Return

When it premiered at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival, Alan Parker's Midnight Express, written by a then up-and-coming Oliver Stone, became an immediate sensation. Almost 40 years later, this self-reflexive film that also premiered in Cannes explores the emotional and political power of cinema, as seen through the lens of the blockbuster hit that turned the protagonist Billy Hayes into an international celebrity, an enemy of Turkey, and a more complicated and wily real-life personality than even the movie could’ve dreamt up. A must watch for any cinephile.
