Mikio Naruse

He was born in Tokyo, on August 20, 1905.As the youngest child of a poor family, his only chance at secondary education was to study engineering in technical school. At the age of fifteen, though having no vocation for cinema, he is employed by Shochicu studios as property manager. Later he is promoted to assistant director and in 1930 he gets to direct his first short, Chanbara fufu. In 1935, after 24 films mixing laughter with melodrama, made according to the studio demands, he leaves Shochiku for PCL,which soon grew into the important Toho company. He stayed there until 1967 and his 89th and last film. Master of «shomingeki», a realistic film genre about working class characters, and «the women’s film», he directed his best work – a series of low key masterpieces portraying the hardships of a joyless everyday existence, the dissolution of the family and the muted violence of emotions. He died in Tokyo, on July 2, 1969.
