The opening of the 66th Thessaloniki International Film Festival’s main exhibition, titled “Plot Twist (the science fiction change)” took place on Friday, October 31st at MOMus-Experimental Center for the arts (Warehouse Β1, Port of Thessaloniki). Olga Kefalogianni, the Minister of Tourism and Iason Fotilas, the Deputy Minister of Culture, responsible for Contemporary Culture, honored the opening with their presence. The audience was welcomed by the Festival’s Artistic Director, Orestis Andreadakis, and the exhibition’s curator, Nadja Argyropoulou, responsible for the realization of the exhibition, which is part of the Festival’s grand tribute to the Plot Twist.
Ben Rivers, whose film Mare’s Nest is featured in the Special Screenings of the >>Film Forward Competition Section was also in attendance, along with the Errands group, whose works are showcased in the exhibition.
In parallel, the opening festivities of the 9th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, titled “Everything Must Change. Radical Intelligence. Saloniki 9,” and curated by independent curator and art historian Nadja Argyropoulou, were also held on Friday. The 9th Thessaloniki Biennale celebrated its opening with events, workshops, screenings, discussions, live music, DJ sets, and live performances by Vassilina, Bipolia, and The Callas with The Callasettes
On Friday evening, one of the greatest films of all time about motor sports, the legendary Grand Prix (1966), directed by John Franckenheimer, was screened. The screening was held with the support of OPAP, member of Allwyn. John Franckenheimer chose to film a real Grand Prix to capture the right level of drama and speed – with modified cameras attached to the cars, giving the first Cinerama audiences the viewpoints of the drivers. The screening was prefaced by the Festival’s Head of Communications, Dimitra Nikolopoulou, who stated that the Festival is delighted that collaborations such as these ones offer the opportunity to showcase rare cinematic gems.
A live performance by Kostis Maraveyas - powered by OPAP, member of Allwyn, will take place on Sunday, November 2nd at the historic Eightball club (Pindou 1, Ladadika). Admission is free, on a first-come-first-served basis.
