Dragged Off a Cliff, Crete 1947

Crete, 1947. While the Civil War was raging, on midnight of 1 August, members of Pavlos Gyparis’s parastatal group abducted priest Nicolaos Apostolakis, a member of the Democratic Army of Greece, and, after brutally torturing him, threw his body off the Red Cliff. His wife was deported from the village of Nerochori Apokoronou where the family resided, and their five children continued to be prosecuted into their university years. The facts are narrated by survivors of the period, and mainly by Apostolakis’s daughter Ismene.
