BALKAN FUND WINNER RECEIVES AWARD AT THE 61ST CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Aida Begic’s film Snow (Snijeg), awarded one of the 10.000 Euros BALKAN FUND script development grants in 2004, has won the Grand Prix de la Semaine de la Critique in this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The BALKAN FUND, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival script development fund headed by Christina Kallas, was the first step in the film’s successful development towards production and completion. After the 2004 BALKAN FUND Workshop, director of Cinefondation and BALKAN FUND jury member, Georges Goldenstern, invited the project to the Cannes Film Festival Cinefondation, thus establishing the project’s future success. Snow, a Bosnia-Herzegovina, French, German and Iranian co-production directed by Aida Begic and written by Begic and producer Elma Tataragic, recounts the story of a young woman and her fellow villagers trying to survive in the frozen, war-ravaged community of Slavno. Snow is Begic’s first feature film.
