HAREM SUARE

HAREM SUARE

The setting is Yildiz Palace, Istanbul, at the turn of the 19th century. Outside, the revolution is brewing. Unbeknownst to the inhabitants of the palace -the isolated Sultan who listens to Italian opera, the silent servants and powerful eunuchs, and the women of the Harem of all ages and diverse cultures- the Ottoman Empire is about to come to an end. To while away the long evenings in the Harem, an old servant begins to tell a story. It's a tale of an impossible love between a Sultan's favourite concubine and her black eunuch, a tale of politics, jealousies, elaborate schemes, happiness and sensuality. In a complex play of time, cultures, myths, sexualities, languages and history, Harem suare evokes a historical period that lasted for five centuries and a setting that has become the stuff of myth and dreams.
