The Music Box

The Japanese invade Shanghai in 1937. Hairdresser Lu Ping flees the city after he accidentally cuts the throat of a Japanese soldier. He hides out in a small village,working for Master Song.The music box containing his haircutting equipment attracts the attention of Song’s daughter, the beautiful Jiayi. Despite her engagement to jealous KMT Commander Ye, Lu and Jiayi become close.When the village is invaded, Lu Ping slashes his hand rather than become a barber for the Japanese army. In the turmoil of war, Jiayi marries Ye. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, Lu Ping returns to Shanghai. There he encounters Yu Mian, who has attracted the attentions of a certain Commander Ye...

Chen Yifei

He began his career in oil painting after receiving his Master’s Degree in Αrt in New York. He produced and directed his first feature, Reveries on Old Shanghai, coming to international attention when his second feature, Evening Liaison, premiered at Cannes. Chen Yifei passed away in 2005, after spending three years on The Music Box.
