He was born in Montreal in 1989. He made his debut when he was very young and appeared in several commercials for a pharmaceutical company. He then went on to work in television and film. I Killed My Mother is his first feature as both director and producer. He wrote it when he was 17.

2009 J’ai tue ma mere/I Killed My Mother

Born in Montreal in 1989, he started his career acting in a number of TV series and films, as well as doing voice work in the dubbing industry. He attracted international attention when his debut feature J’ai tue ma mere, in which he also starred, won three awards from the Director’s Fortnight at the 2009 Cannes IFF. Dolan’s second feature film, Heartbeats, premiered in the Un Certain Regard category at the 63rd Cannes IFF in May 2010, and won the top prize of the Official Competition at the Sydney Film Festival. His third film Laurence Anyways was, again, selected to compete in the 2012 Un Certain Regard, where it took the Best Actress Award. He is now working on his fifth feature film, currently titled Mommy. Production is expected to start later this fall.
