63rd THESSALONIKI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL // 3-13/11/2022

Corsage, winner of the Best Film award at the London Film Festival, is the closing film of the 63rd TIFF

Corsage by Marie Kreutzer that just won the Best Film award at the London Film Festival, will close the 63rd Thessaloniki International Film Festival, on Sunday, November 13, 2022.

The film approaches Empress Sissy in a different way and takes a feminist look at the social constraints that a woman in a position of power has to face, while building a sensitive and melancholic portrait. It is a period drama, completely modern and unconventional, far from clichés and stereotypes.

Empress Elizabeth of Austria is idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. But in 1877, ‘Sissi’ celebrates her 40th birthday and must fight to maintain her public image by lacing her corset tighter and tighter. While Elizabeth’s role has been reduced against her wishes to purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her more and more restless in Vienna. She travels to England and Bavaria, visiting former lovers and old friends, seeking the excitement and purpose of her youth. With a future of strictly ceremonial duties laid out in front of her, Elizabeth rebels against the hyperbolized image of herself and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.

Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) gives a masterful performance as Empress Sissy and invites us to rediscover the woman behind the legend. The actress won the Best Performance award at the Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival.

Corsage will hit Greek cinemas on November 17th, distributed by Cinobo.
