THE WAY TO THE WEST

The film is a combination of documentary and fiction. A woman from the former Soviet Union, Irina, comes to Greece in search of a better life and falls victim to the sex slave trade (trafficking). She wanders around Athens in search of a friend of hers who has disappeared. Her story unfolds through a series of personal confessions. During these moments of reality, Irina is in some way present as a sort of "suffering angel" who comments on the aftermath, indirectly linking the present to the past, the real to the imaginary. The presence of painting in the film emphasizes or illustrates the dreams and nightmares that this intense slice of present-day reality provokes. In other words, the uprooting of millions of people from their homes--history that repeats itself.

Kyriakos Katzourakis

Born in Athens in 1944, Kyriakos Katzourakis initially studied painting and theatre design at the Athens School of Fine Arts, before training as an engraver at the St. Martins School of Art in London, where he also attended courses on cinema. He lived in England from 1972 to 1985 and has organised numerous exhibitions in Greece and abroad (London, Biennale Sao Paulo, Biennale de Paris, etc). He designed the sets of Pandelis Voulgaris’ film The Engagement of Anna and created the costumes for Days of `36 by Theo Angelopoulos. Since 1988 he has collaborated with the Art Theatre on numerous plays and he worked on the first production of the Octana dance group in 1993. Since 1991 he has been working with the Art Group "Omada Technis" on the relationship between drawing and theatre, music, photography and cinema. The Way to the West marks his directorial debut.
