21st THESSALONIKI DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL [1-10/3/2019]

Opening Film

Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love

The 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival kicks off on Friday, March 1st, 2019 at the Olympion theatre with Nick Broomfield’s documentary Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love.

Following its recent world premiere at Sundance Film Festival, the film will be screened in Thessaloniki. It tells the beautiful yet complicated love story of Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen and follows their relationship from the early days in the island of Hydra, Greece, a time of ‘free love’ and open marriage, to how their love evolved when Leonard became a successful musician. Broomfield inserts himself in the story, as he befriended Marianne at that time. Marianne and Leonard went through many highs and lows. Bonded for life, even though drifting apart, they died four months apart in 2016.
