The countdown for the 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (March 1-10, 2019) begins with the tribute “Why Look at Animals”, dedicated to the special relationship between humans and animals.

The tribute is inspired by the same titled essay by the iconic British art critic, author and painter John Berger (1926-2017) and presents a selection of poignant documentaries that explore the various aspects of the interaction between man and animal.

Following the latest collaboration between the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and SciencesThe Distant Barking of Dogs by the Danish filmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont that won the Golden Alexander award in the 20th TDF last March became automatically eligible for the Best Feature Documentary Oscar® and additionally made it to the short list of 15 documentaries that were selected as contenders for the 91st Academy Awards® out of 166 films that were originally submitted in the category.
