Clandestine Childhood

Argentina 1979. After years of exile, twelve-year-old Juan and his family come back to Argentina under fake identities. Juan’s parents and his uncle Beto are members of the Montoneros, an organization fighting against the military junta that rules the country. Because of their political activities, they are being tracked relentlessly. His friends at school and Maria, the girl he loves, know him as Ernesto, a name he must not forget, his family’s survival being at stake. This is a story about militancy, undercover life and love. The story of a clandestine childhood.

Benjamin Αvila

He is a producer of educational programs for television, a short-film screenwriter and director. He won several international awards for his documentary Nietos (Identidad y memoria), about the children of the disappeared whose identities have been restored by the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo. Clandestine Childhood is his first feature and is based on his own life. It won the Casa de America Award at Films in Progress 20 (San Sebastian, 2011) and the Best Director Award at the San Sebastian IFF 2012. It also screened at the Directors’ Fortnight of the 2012 Cannes IFF.
