You don't Know Dick

This is a documentary about women who have chosen to change their gender and become men. They have lived within bodies they don't accept; they have tried to adapt to social expectations they can't fulfill; they have experienced devastating personal pain that cannot be obscured by denial. These men have embarked upon an enormous struggle to recover dignity and an identity denied. Through a weave of interviews, personal testimonials, recollections of friends and family and recordings of family outings, the film illuminates the human side of this unusual journey for personal identity and tries to answer some of the many questions that arise from this issue. For example, what happens to one's sexuality when one becomes a transsexual? How does gender identity shape an individual, particularly when the birth gender does not align with an individual's self perception? What is the difference between sex and gender? How do parents and children respond to transsexuality? What happens to one's past or anything related to that past? You Don't Know Dick examines a complex transformation that is frightening and risky, but which is the only way for these women to become who they really are
