22nd TDF: Closing Film

22ο THESSALONIKI DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL [5-15/3/2020]

CLOSING FILM

From the Oscars to Thessaloniki

The Oscar-winning short documentary Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) by Carol Dysinger is the closing film of the 22nd Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. The closing ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2020. The director will be in Thessaloniki to present a touching, but also filled with humor, story of emancipation.

The film is about freedom, a love letter to the brave girls of Afghanistan. Life for them is not easy: they face an endless chain of prohibitions imposed by religious fanaticism and patriarchy. The documentary follows courageous teachers in Kabul, who as part of NGO Skateistan’s educational programs, help a group of teenage girls from disadvantaged neighborhoods to learn how to read, write and… skateboard, using the most powerful weapons: self-confidence and self-respect.
