A second step for a more sustainable and greener experience

In its second edition, the Evia Film Project aims to help strengthen the region’s local economy in a sustainable manner, respecting both the local ecosystem and the need for growth. The second Evia Film Project acknowledges its impact and pledges once more to be as green and sustainable as possible, by adopting a thoughtful approach as to how we go about our lives, and we hope this will inspire and inform everyone to do the same. The demand is urgent and reflects a long-term responsibility the Thessaloniki International Film Festival commits to serving, both since last year’s Evia Film Project and in all of its future functions. As a festival, we have always aimed to host stories that address urgent social issues of global impact, giving our audiences the space to reflect on how they lead their own lives. In our latest project, along with the local authorities hosting the events and our vendors, we invite you as our fellow participants and active citizens to join us in our effort to pursue more sustainable ways of experiencing the festival

One-on-one sustainable film production consulting sessions

Wednesday June 21st-Saturday June 24th
ΚIΜΑ 11:00-16:00

Film industry professionals who are interested in sustainability issues and looking for guidance on socially and environmentally sustainable practices to reduce their environmental impact can register for a one-on-one sustainability session with the EFP Sustainability Advisor, Emma Doxiadi. A Greek-Australian filmmaker with a strong focus on sustainability, she implements sustainable practices, policies, and circular economy principles as a sustainability manager collaborating with entities such as the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Production Designers Gathering; additionally, she works for upcoming feature film productions, contributing to industry engagement for a more sustainable future.

Waste management

In collaboration with the Municipalities of Istiea-Edipsos and the Municipality of Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna, circular economy companies and environmental action initiatives such as the Cigaret Cycle and Fabric Republic projects, EFP will proceed a daily collection, sorting, and cyclical management of the waste generated from all the event spots in Edipsos, Agia Anna, and Limni. More specifically, in the locations where the events will take place, there will be separate recycling bins for the streams of paper, plastic, aluminum, glass, cigarette butts, as well as a box for the collection of scrap textiles. At the end of each event, the collected materials will be transferred to special storage bins, where they will be weighed and recorded. The collected materials will be transferred to each stream’s waste management units, for their proper management, in order to gain a second life or to be responsibly recycled. Thus, paper, plastic, glass and aluminum will be promoted for re-use or recycling, cigarette butt filters will be turned into recycled new materials and products, while paper, tobacco, and ash residues are turned into fertilizer for use in floriculture.

Pop-up restaurant Fennel

The new, nature-friendly pop-up restaurant that “springs up” everywhere (just as fennel!) and awakens familiar flavors and aromas of Greek nature. An alternative gastronomic proposal of nomadic nature draws inspiration from seasonal foods, sometimes including fish caught by the team or wild materials plucked straight from nature, escapes the bounds of a typical restaurant and the everyday repetition it requires, approaching the dining experience with creativity and freedom and sharing what its team sees as a way of life and expression. The fennel team consists of chef Yiannis Kandylidis, restaurateur and events manager George Varvaritis, and amateur chef George Antonopoulos, who holds an MSc in Environmental Studies from the National Technical University of Athens

Travel

Think about your arrival to and departure from the festival. When you can, travel by walking, cycling, car-pooling can be quicker, more practical, and scenic – good for our health plus it also lowers our carbon emissions.

Water

By having a bottle with you at all times, you will be able to refill it at our water fountains, provided in all of our festival venues. Health protocols will be respected. Let’s avoid using single-use plastic bottles. You can recycle throw-away water bottles at our plastic recycling stations.

Making consumption sustainable

We are limiting our festival promotional materials, being mindful of the environmental impact and footprint they entail. Approach merchandise while being mindful of consumption and efficiency. Our printed materials are issued on ecological paper and we will recycle them at the end of our activities. Instead of throwing paper away, recycle it!

Sustainable eating and drinking

Opt to buy and consume seasonal and local food and beverages, available at any venue you find during the duration of your stay in Evia. Along with minimizing the energy spent on transporting materials, you can help strengthen the local economy and diversify your experience!
